In 2022, for the first time, the University compiled and published the Annual Economic Report of Da Nang City, providing multidimensional and in-depth insights into the city's economic recovery potential post-pandemic. Following the success of the 2022 report, the University has compiled the 2023 Annual Report with the theme 'Identifying and Directing the Development of Key Economic Sectors of Da Nang City'. The 2023 report focuses on clarifying existing issues in the city's economic structure as well as opportunities for transitioning industries in the future. By identifying components of Da Nang's economic growth, the report aims to elucidate sectoral dynamics in 2023 and recommend priority sectors for development in the coming years."

In 2023, the global economy, and consequently the Vietnamese economy, are experiencing significant fluctuations. Changes in power dynamics, geopolitical conflicts, economic cycles, and environmental costs pose increasingly significant challenges for countries, especially those seeking to maintain growth momentum while restructuring their economies to enhance quality. In this context, Vietnam urgently needs changes and breakthroughs from leading economic centers to sustain current economic stability and provide long-term development impetus.

Delegates attending the seminar

As one of the five centrally-governed cities and the core of the Central Highlands - Central Vietnam Economic Dynamic Region, Da Nang plays a crucial role in Vietnam's overall recovery and development strategy post-Covid. Furthermore, with the growing influence of Southeast Asian countries, competition among major cities in the region is intensifying. This presents both challenges and significant opportunities for Vietnamese cities, including Da Nang, to strategize for a prominent position in the years to come.

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hai presented the discussion report

However, despite showing strong signs of recovery post-COVID-19, Da Nang's economic growth in 2023 is slowing down. In 2023, Da Nang's GRDP growth only reached 2.58% compared to the national average of 5.05%. Da Nang's growth model, relying on service and high-tech industries, faces competition from similar domestic locations. Therefore, reassessing and correctly identifying the city's advantageous economic sectors is essential for shaping medium and long-term policies and for businesses to determine their investment structures. To achieve the target of an average annual growth rate of 12% as set out in Resolution 43 of the Central Committee in 2019, Da Nang needs intelligent and resolute choices in adjusting its development model based on its specific competitive advantages.

Dr. Pham Quang Tin - a representative of the research group presented the report

On the basis of inheriting the successes of the 2022 Annual Report, since the third quarter of 2023, the collective efforts of university scientists have been continuously striving to draft the 2023 Annual Economic Assessment Report of the city. Two presentations were made at the seminar:

- Presentation 1: "From Context to Development Policies for Da Nang City: Identifying Challenges and Seeking Advantages" presented by Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hai - Department of Employment, Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs.

- Presentation 2: "Identifying and Directing the Development of Key Economic Sectors of Da Nang City" by Dr. Pham Quang Tin - Representative of the Research Team, University of Economics - Da Nang University.

Delegates exchange opinions at the seminar

During the seminar, frank, focused, and effective exchanges of views by delegates contributed to the formulation of policies and the development of Da Nang City in the coming years.

With nearly 50 years of establishment and development, the University of Economics - Da Nang University has continuously strengthened its policy consulting activities, actively contributed intellectual resources, and had a strong voice in the process of building important strategies, policy orientations, and projects for Da Nang City and Central Highlands - Central Vietnam localities, gradually becoming an independent and reputable policy research unit.
