(According to Tuoitre.vn) – An independent group of specialists announce results of a three-year project of ranking Vietnam higher education institutions. The project was conducted in many steps included criteria building, sample testing, data collecting and processing. On September 9th, this group held a press conference to announce the ranking of 49 sampled Vietnamese universities. Accordingly, the national and regional universities all have high ranks with three of the top five institutions are national and regional universities located in Vietnam economic centers, including the Vietnam National University, Ha Noi (No. 1), the University of Danang (No. 4) and Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City (No. 5). some “young” universities have high ranks such as Ton Duc Thang University (No. 2), Duy Tan University (No. 9). The primary base of this ranking is scientific research & international publications, investment policies in facilities and staff, internationalization promotion of the institution. Number of students and employment ratio are important criteria according to the group of specialists. In addition, criteria related to ensuring the quality of training such as qualified faculty are important indicators. Another surprising fact is that “aged” economic universities, whose reputation is publicly considered as top-ranked, have lower ranking in this report. Specifically, the Foreign Trade University ranks 23; the National Economics University ranks 30; the Vietnam University of Commerce ranks 29; the Academy of Finance ranks 40. The reason for these “medium” positions is lack of international scientific publications, quite large gap between education scale and faculty’s competencies.
