Tuoi tre newspaper: Students “build” green schools

17/08/2022

For nearly 2 years, Green University DUE on environmental protection and sustainable green lifestyle development has been a pioneer project of students in Da Nang with many activities to spread green lifestyle, bringing many positive results.

In particular, this project was developed by students who are always concerned about the environment in their own schools.

The project contributes to changing the mindset of not only students but also teachers, gradually forming habits, promoting teachers and students to use green and friendly products, contributing to reducing plastic waste into the environment - Ms. Tran Thi Thanh Thao (Secretary of the Union of the University of Economics, the University of Danang).

"Green market" in the middle of the university campus

The campus of the University of Economics (the University of Danang) - a weekend morning full of laughter and talk. Quite a lot of university’s students and students from a few primary schools went to GreenFair Day to shop and experience at "green" business stalls.

The Day is part of the Green University DUE project chain to direct students in Da Nang to be aware of environmental protection and develop a sustainable green lifestyle.

Carrying a bag of used plastic bottles, The Kiet (Le Lai Primary School, Hai Chau District, Da Nang) timidly brought to the booth to exchange trash for trees.

After counting the number of bottles, Kiet personally picked a lovely lotus plant to bring home. "I'm very happy, I don't think that the discarded plastic bottles can be exchanged for trees to decorate the study table. I will invite a few more friends to save plastic bottles waiting to exchange gifts at the next market" - Kiet said.

Many other stalls such as organic food, clean food, soaps, natural flavors, grass straws, bagasse boxes, etc. also attract young people. Bao Ngoc (the University of Economics) is fascinated in front of the GUD - Custom stall. Here, Ngoc unleashes her creativity, decorating paper cups, grass straws, boxes and plates of eco-friendly bagasse and then bringing them home.

Ngoc shared: "In Da Nang, there are still quite a few activities to spread the green lifestyle with such investment and scale. This is really an effective way to propagate environmental protection to young people, especially students because we can see it, do it with our hands and actually protect the environment from simple things."

At the Day, students also exchanged paper, exchanged old batteries for green trees, exhibited about the journey of building a green university, participated in folk games with items from recycled waste, Ringed the Green Bell with knowledge about green living, joined hands to protect the environment, etc.

Students taking the lead

This project was implemented by young lecturers and students who share a love for the environment and a desire to "build" a "green" university. This is also one of the first projects towards a sustainable green lifestyle of students in Da Nang.

Deputy Head of the Project Organizing Committee Nguyen Thi Thanh Bich (21 years old) said that students will be the first to take the lead, and then expect to spread it to the people with practical and close-knit projects.

Bich shared: "We seek to maintain the enthusiasm in the members, want to transmit that spirit to the people around us so that it affects the perception so that people are willing to accept the trade-off between convenience and environmental protection action".

After nearly two years of operation, the project has launched a series of programs: One green action every day, the contest "Green status quo", the talk "Green living and building a sustainable lifestyle", "Green message with clean water bottle to school", many garbage pick-up sessions attract a large number of participants, etc.

Recently, the challenge "Green living with clean water bottles" called on students to use personal water bottles and get water from water purifiers in schools instead of using single-use bottled water has spread within a short time of its launch.

Many bad habits of students about the environment have gradually changed more positively. These include bringing a water bottle to school, limiting the use of single-use plastics, unplugging the power cord when not using electrical equipment, etc. Along with that, the project began to plant more trees in the schools’ campus.

Thanks to this project, the University of Economics (the University of Danang) installed water purifiers in many areas. In the near future, there will be a projection screen in the hall instead of using plastic banners for programs as before. And those small changes are gradually creating the school's appearance to become "greener" and "healthier", as well as a lesson about the community's responsibility to the environment, from the students.
