Globalisation and a miracle in Singapore, a thematic lecture by professor Gary Lit

On 12th and 13th of April, Professor Gary Lit, from Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) had a lecture on globalization and an amazing development of Singapore at Da Nang University of Economics. He provided the lecturers and students with useful knowledge of history, economics, and politics, which inspired the audience at the ceremony.


What is globalization? Why is it important to a nation and eac h individual? Who will be the winner or the loser of such a fight? Those were mainly discussed in the meeting by Professor Gary Lit. Professor Gary Lit also provided reality-related evidence that globalization brings about thanks to high-quality technologies such as iPhone, Facebook, Grab or Marvel, DC, Walt Disney, even western cuisine, including KFC, Starbucks, or McDonald. The way that Bill Gate, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs or Jack Ma has changed our daily habits has really change the world with technologies, or globalization.

"DeGlobalization: The Backlash or Blowback towards Globalization" (12th April) mentioned sub-sided effects of globalization. With his real-life experiences and sense of humor,  Professor Gary Lit conducted his presentation on the increase in traffic and its congestion in Ho Chi Minh City, in order to lead to hunger, diseases, poor-rich gaps, and conflicts in developing countries, which have all originated from globalization.

   

As a small country with scare resource, Singapore has changed largely to become the “Dragon” of Asia – a symbol of developing in its economy. Behind the glamour, it was such a series of strategies, together with solidarity of the nation and its citizens to carry out policies on opening trading, developing financial centre, socio-economic development. Singapore is such a great inspiration to developing countries, Vietnam for example.

The significance of success is the opening trading policies, determination of Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, and the national solidarity, faith upon Singaporean government. “50 years ago, ASEAN leaders were great, they had different ways to develop the country. However, as for Lee Kuan Yew, he had distinctive thoughts on opening new doors to trading and innovation from other countries”, said Professor Gary Lit.

Globalization is crucial. What should the youth do? As for Professor Gary Lit, “think differently”, keep up with high techs and never give up on new ideas. Integration and creativity are to follow the trend, as what people and the government in Singapore have done.
