29/07/2022

On the afternoon of July 28, following the plenary session Under the Higher Education Innovation Cooperation Project between the University of Danang and Indiana University (USA), the group meeting "Business, economics and public policy" took place at the University of Economics - the University of Danang.

Attending the meeting were Prof. Kerry Krutilla (Indiana University), Assoc. Markus Taussig (Rutgers Business School), Assoc. Phuong (Bob) Ngo (Cleveland Regional University), experts from the partners participating in the PHER project in the United States, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Le Van Huy – Vice Rector, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dang Huu Man – Head of Science & International Cooperation Department and members of the Scholars Network of the group “Business, Economics and Public Policy” at the University of Danang.

The PHER Project is a five-year initiative (2022-2026) to modernize the three leading universities in Vietnam (Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City and the University of Danang) and support the development of the Vietnamese education system. The project is part of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Program to support the development of higher education in Vietnam. The strategic objective of the PHER project is to focus on four main pillars, including: governance innovation program, teaching and learning quality improvement program, research capacity building program, and program to strengthen University - Business connection to directly support three leading universities in Vietnam. In the pillar of governance innovation, PHER offers the opportunity to strengthen university governance capacity for leaders of Vietnamese universities. The pillar of improving teaching and learning quality focuses on developing faculty capacity in designing modern courses, digitizing training programs to help students expand access to high-quality teaching and learning resources. At the same time, the program will build communities of faculty in a variety of areas of expertise to encourage academic intercollegiate collaboration. Pillar of enhancing research capacity, PHER helps to improve research and innovation capacity, linking research activities with economic and social needs of the country through scholar and faculty exchanges, seminars and short courses. Through the pillar of strengthening university-business connections, PHER helps universities build and maintain university-business partnerships.

In 2022, the project is conducting a survey phase, assessing the need to improve governance capacity of 3 Vietnamese higher education institutions. At the meeting of the "Economics, Business and Public Policy" scholars group, scholars in Vietnam had the opportunity to share their academic research fields as well as the difficulties in accessing international database sources for research. The meeting proposed a number of directions for cooperation in the near future between the University of Economics - the University of Danang and Indiana University such as:

- Co-organizers of the international conference or Indiana University scholars can attend the international conferences organized by DUE as Keynote Speakers;

- Organizing online academic seminars (1-2 times/month);

- Cooperation in research and publication of international articles.

At the end of the session, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dang Huu Man thanked the US delegation for taking the time to work and believed that with the active support of the Project, the University of Danang will become more sustainable and autonomous through the system and administrative capacity are improved, the quality of teaching and learning is improved, and research and innovation capacity is enhanced.
